Moon Altar Competition Winners

We received a number of clever, artistic, and innovative moon altar entries for our competition that community members made and use to deepen their experiences with Grandmother Moon, the feminine energies, and their own moon cycles. Each altar had different attributes and functions, and all were so different that it was difficult to pick a single winner. What I've decided to do is to recognize 3 entries and explain why each person is receiving an award.

  • Technical Merit Award:  This prize goes to Tracey for her technically sophisticated system that combines a small box with the moon phases on it plus some astrology apps, a moon journal, and guidance from Quan Yin to guide her ceremonial work.

  • Artistic Excellence Award:  This prize goes to Mollie for her highly creative, mixed media poster that honors the 28 unique daily changes of the moon each moon cycle as well as the 13 moons within each calendar year. She combines those with images of celestial bears and the Star Nation.

  • Honoring Traditions Award: The most traditional moon altar was submitted by Vicki. This ceremonial space combines a plate with the phases of the moon and a small grandmother statue holding a clear marble (moon) in its lap. The altar also features representations of the 4 elements (earth, water, fire, air) and 4 kingdoms (humans, animal, plant, and mineral). She uses her altar with her pipe to deepen her understandings of Grandmother Moon.

Two of the winners will be at the Michigan Autumn Equinox Pipe Carriers' Dance next week and will receive their certificates and prizes during that event. The other winner will be mailed her certificate and prize.

Over the next few weeks, I'll show more detailed photos of each person's altar and explain a bit more about how she uses it. I hope you enjoy their creativity as much as I did.
